There’s a great debate in the ballroom scene regarding “Ballroom Status”. Below are some criteria that I, Icon Jamal Milan have created for achieving ballroom status that may assist in resolving that dilemma. Please see the link to the 2010 Ballroom Status Criteria located on the right.
Attention Ballroom Scene….
On April 4, 2010 Easter Sunday, the Ballroom Community representatives met in NY and as a whole. We discussed, amended and adpoted the Ballroom Status Criteria into the community effective immediately based on a democratic vote, MAJORITY RULES, making Ballroom History in the new millenium. I like to refer to this moment as The Rebirth of the Ballroom Scene!!
The Ballroom Community Conference Attendance list:You should all be proud of being apart of a positive movement for the ballroom scene. It’s even more special that it happened on Easter, the Rebirth of the Ballroom Scene. This will only work if WE stick to it as a community. It is our job and responsibility to uphold this for a better community in our future. I personally thank you and salute you all!!!

National Ballroom Meeting
9-4-2010
As most of you know the 1st National Ball Meeting was held in Atlanta September 4th 2010 and even though it was limited invitations sent out to come take participation in this ground breaking event in order to get the ballroom scene back on track there were invites sent to every part of the country. The idea behind this meeting was to get ballroom leaders from various city, states and regions of our ballroom community in one room so that we can address the issues that we are facing in the ballroom today! It was not about names, status, or individual houses but strictly about the people who care enough of this culture to see to it that it doesn’t totally evaporate into oblivion.
I know some people wasn’t able to come but this was just 1 of the many to come so be advised that your minds and opinions will be needed in the near future so I definitely hope you and other leaders in our ballroom community step up to the plate!!

National Ballroom Board
The National Ballroom Board will help establish and maintain a blueprint for the ballroom scene to do its best to keep it fair and maintain the integrity of the ball scene from state to state, and also help mentor new cities and states in the ballroom community. Trying to establish this Board for 2011
1. Will consist of 2 people from each city/state/region that has an established ballroom council/federation/alliance
2. The 2 members that represent their city/state/region would be chosen by their city/state/region ballroom council/federation/alliance to represent them on the National Ballroom Board.
3. The 2 members chosen must have consistency in the ballroom scene of 10 years or more, and have ballroom traveled at least 3 Regions.
4. When items are voted on each city/state/region will have one vote on that item.
5. The National Ballroom Board will meet via Conference call (times/dates will be set by Board) and also will meet in person at least once a year.
6. For a City/State/Region to have voting representation on the National Ballroom Board they must have been nationally active in the Ballroom for more than 10 years.
7. If a City/State/Region have not been nationally active for more than 10 years they are still allowed to represent their City/State/Region on the Board but will not have a vote on items.
The following is how city/state/regions were broken down based on who already have established ballroom council/federation/alliances, if someone is left out please feel free to email me.

Status Criteria
This is status criteria that was set by Jamal Milan and agreed upon by everyone that was in attendance at the National Ballroom meeting, and using this as a guideline should easily let you know and your house members know exactly where they stand as far as status!
This will be adhered to and enforced by the National Ballroom Board and by each city/state/regions ballroom council/federation/alliance with the help of the local and National Ballroom commentators to ensure that we get the ballroom back on track.
No one is to be deemed Legendary until after the National Ballroom Board has been established.

Specific Status Balls
This was discussed to eliminate a new legend every ball the idea is to make becoming legendary an event and actually mean something! And pay homage to those that have put in work and time to make things happen the right way
Status will be given out twice a year and these will only be during major balls TBD by the National Board (One being the New York Legends ball).
Every representative will bring the individuals names and accomplishments from their City/State/Region that their local council/federation/alliance feel should be given status and it will be voted upon and granted or not granted, because there will be a limit on how many people will be deemed legendary per status ball.
The “Status Ball” will be rotate from city to city (except the New York Legends Ball) and will be hosted by a credible ball promoter in that city!
Re-evaluating Status that does not fit the criteria
This topic was touched on but put on the shelf for next National Ballroom Meeting.
Returning to a true Stars, Statements, and Legends
It was discussed having the commentators Local and National sticking to a true SSL at balls and calling appropriate people out with their appropriate status as opposed to just calling out random people.
The idea for this was just getting back to the basics of what made a ball fun and paying correct homage.
Will be discussed in more detail at next National Ballroom Meeting .
Everything that was discussed at this National Ballroom meeting was talked about and debated by everyone and we came to all the aforementioned criteria to help the ballroom scene get back on track or reload itself , hopefully at the next meeting we will have greater participation, because this is our scene and we have to take responsibility for it.
We know everyone is not going to like the criteria because it detours from what they have in mind for themselves in the ballroom scene but our only goal was for the benefit of the ballroom scene not ourselves!!!!
All your input and opinions are welcome and encouraged!!
